St Marylebone Town Hall

The Town Hall, the home of St Marylebone Metropolitan Borough Council, was opened in March 1920 to replace the old Vestry courthouse.

The foundation stone was laid by the Princess Royal on 8 July 1914. Designed by Sir Edwin Cooper and built by Messrs John Greenwood, the building illustrates the Edwardian Graeco-Roman classicist style of the time. Following a pause in construction during the First World War, it was officially opened by Prince Albert on 27 March 1920. Sir Cooper also designed a public library, which was built to the west of the town hall in 1939.

The Council succeeded the St Marylebone Vestry in 1900, until it was absorbed into the City of Westminster in 1965. Despite bad damage during the Second World War, the council chamber was restored in 1968 to be used as the meeting place for Westminster City Council. Bought by The London Business School in November 2012, with financial support from the Ofer family, around £60 million was spent on refurbishments. It was reopened in 2018, and the City Council still meets here today.
