Connections and Contrasts – Violin & Piano Recital

28 April 2025, 18.30 - 22.00

Referred to as the Roaring Twenties, Les Annés Folles and the Jazz Age, the 1920’s was an era of boundary-breaking creativity, innovation and exploration.

This Recital consists of works for violin and piano written a hundred years ago, from 1925-1927, providing an opportunity to hear how four composers approached their writing at the same moment in history. Although the composers are of different nationalities (Russia, Romania, America and France) and each has a unique voice, they are connected via a combination of friendship and professional admiration, and also by cultural and musical influences from Paris and America, with elements of jazz and folk incorporated into their compositions.

  • Katharine Gowers – One of the UK’s most distinguished violinists, trained at the Juilliard School under Dorothy DeLay, Katharine has performed as a soloist with major orchestras including the Philharmonia, BBC Symphony, and Royal Philharmonic. She is also a dedicated chamber musician and educator.
  • Simon Crawford-Phillips – A multi-award-winning pianist and conductor, Simon is known for his versatility and expressive artistry. He has performed at the BBC Proms, Wigmore Hall, and Carnegie Hall, and is a founding member of the Kungsbacka Piano Trio. His extensive discography and leadership in musical education further underscore his global reputation.

This concert celebrates Central London Samaritans’ move to our new neighbourhood of Marylebone, and raises money for the branch.
