London Open Meeting: Council on Christian Approaches to Defence and Disarmament (“CCADD”)
9 September 2025, 12.30 - 14.30
Changing Nature of Warfare and the Ethical Issues it Poses
Recent conflicts have been characterized by new methods of warfare and appalling casualties. These have included greater use of drones and other remotely directed vehicles on battlefields, at sea and against civilian infrastructure; taking innocent hostages of all genders and ages; intensive bombing of areas where non-combatants are present; a direct attack on suspected facilities for making nuclear weapons; and remote activation of explosives. Use of Artificial Intelligence in warfare is also creating a range of new issues about how decisions are taken, including choosing targets.
The Council on Christian Approaches to Defence and Disarmament plans to address the ethical issues emerging from these new methods of warfare during this Autumn. To begin, a Vice President, Major-General(rtd) Tim Cross, also a regular media commentator, will be assessing the new methods of warfare and the ethical issues they pose in a public lecture on 9 September at 1230 in the Samworth Hall, 102 Marylebone Road, London NW1 5LT (between Baker Street and Regents Park stations, under the church).
CCADD promotes debate between those who often may not agree on such ethical issues. It undertook, for example, a joint project with Islamic scholars on the ethical issues around Terrorism and published a book together. CCADD does not expect to achieve agreement, but promotes understanding between those of differing views. They are especially pleased to see and hear from students.
To join in this free face to face event, please just come along on 9 September for 1230: lunch will be provided. An electronic link will also be available afterwards.
