William Douglas Morrison (1852 -1943)

William Douglas Morrison, was appointed Rector of St Marylebone by the Crown in 1908 and served in this position until 1943.

 

Morrison was born in 1852 in Newton, New Brunswick, Canada. As well as being Rector, Morrison was also a noted Criminologist and Penal Reformer. He was a prison chaplain between 1883 and 1898 and became a noted prison reformer building on this experience. In 1898, he was awarded an LLD by the University of St Andrews, Scotland.

 

From 1902-1908, he was the President of the Churchman’s Union before becoming Rector of St Marylebone.

 

His daughter Alice Frances Mary Morrison married Sir Dykes Spicer, 2nd Bt., son of Rt. Hon. Sir Albert Spicer, 1st Bt. and Jessie Stewart Dykes, on 27 April 1910. She died on 1 December 1963.
