Mozart’s turbulent Requiem was commissioned by a mysterious stranger at the very end of the composer’s life, and was left unfinished at his death. From the very opening we are plunged into a dark and sombre world, yet one with moments of thrilling drama and serene beauty. We pair this masterpiece with three shorter works by Mozart’s successors: Bruckner’s passionate motets, and Brahms’s radiantly beautiful Schicksalslied – this work, ‘The song of destiny’, tackles similar themes to the Requiem, yet transports us to a peaceful world of divine redemption, far from the struggles and strife of earth.
With a full orchestra and stellar line up of soloists, this concert promises to be a highlight of the 2025 St Marylebone Festival.
