Just like all other facets of life, the social scene of Marylebone has also evolved over the years. Our interviewees reflect the varied social lives of those living in Marylebone, showing the diverse perspectives that make up this area.

 

Gill vividly recalls the scenes of the swinging ‘60s and discotheques where the likes of The Beatles and Stevie Wonder were played. This was also where she first met her now-husband.

 

Martin reminisces about the vibrant LGBT+ bars and pubs that he frequented while living in Marylebone during the 1990s, looking back fondly on memories of performances by the famous drag queen Maisie Trollette and the welcoming and informal atmosphere found in these bars. While these bars and pubs may still be open, Martin reflects on how the social scene within these spaces has changed over the years, perhaps having lost some of the vibrancy and excitement they once had.

Pubs are, undoubtedly, a key facet of many Brits’ social lives. Leda talks about the warm environments of pubs growing up, where everyone knew one another and the community gathered.

Reflecting on his time living in Marylebone in the 1990s, Martin looks back on the vibrant LGBT bars and pubs that existed at that time and the memories and experiences that they engendered.

Marjorie studied at the Royal Academy of Music and has lived in Marylebone since the 1960s. She reminisces about living in a run-down Mews cottage in Marylebone with her best friend, a fellow musician from the Academy.
