Opening Hours
Traditional arts and crafts by Claire Fitzgerald: 24 April - 19 May 2026
About the artist:
I am a Catholic artist and I live in London with my husband David.
I have a Diploma in Technical Hand Embroidery from the Royal School of Needlework. I use these skills in the conservation and construction of mass vestments and liturgical furnishings.
I have also studied on the Open Programme at the King’s Foundation School of Traditional Arts. I am passionate about using the same traditional methods and materials that monks and masters have used in monasteries for centuries.
I paint with natural pigments derived from rocks, or precious stones. I often make my own pigments by washing and grinding them in a pestle and mortar. These processes enable me to engage more deeply by becoming aware of the ways the material world can be used for the glory of God.
My art illustrates stories of the Saints or Biblical scenes. I feel deeply connected to the art from the Celtic and Anglo-Saxon early church.
I am interested in the relationship between truth and beauty. Beauty conveys and eternal wisdom and knowledge that directs us towards the divine. The use of traditional craft practices gives us confidence in our Christian heritage. I am interested in the ways we can use traditional skills and craft practice to develop
places of prayer that are beautiful.
David provides loving support and artistic direction.
