The Head of Christ by Andrew Gow

Andrew Gow is a portrait painter working across Europe and the United States. The parish church inventory dates this painting to approximately 2011. It is of special significance to St. Marylebone as his parents lived in the parish during the early-21st century, and still worship in the parish church.
This charcoal and pencil drawing is a telling portrait of Christ for its expressive articulation of Jesus’ divine likeness in terms of light and shade. Light seems to be emanating from Jesus in every direction, so intense that it almost envelops the entire composition and engulfs the darkness. His lowered head in profile, downward gaze and the slightly arched back connote Christ’s characteristic humility and virtue.
